I can turn off my nose. If there is an unpleasant smell, I just shut off that part of my brain and nose and quit breathing. Whether a smelly child, a stinky diaper, bad breath, public bathrooms, curdled milk, vomit or body odor, I quit breathing. Great talent, eh? Well, yes, in those circumstances. But what about everyday life?

Until recently, I hadn't realized I had been functioning with very shallow breaths. My breathing had been on the surface and so had my life.

I had the privilege of going to a retreat last week. I learned how to reconnect my mind with my body through yoga. I learned how to listen to my body. I learned how to breathe through pain to relieve my physical pain. I learned how to recognize the little things. I learned how to breathe again. And it is beautiful and glorious!
It's a great book! I've been thinking about how I can help my boys and the children in Midvale Elementary and this book gives me the courage to stand up and speak! I have been thinking that my one voice won't make a difference. I'm wrong! And that is just the adversary telling me I shouldn't even bother. It's apathy and depression setting in and it's absolutely NOT true. I am one voice. I can make a difference!! And I will make a difference! Thank you Mrs. Boyack for the vote of confidence!!Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-292586565254882492012-11-11T22:52:00.001-05:002012-11-11T22:52:08.323-05:00Elliot and I went on a date last night sponsored by the Wounded Warrior Project. It was refreshing to be out with people who've gone through what we're going through. I mean, to look at Elliot, you wouldn't think he was hurt. He doesn't look hurt. He doesn't act hurt. By all intents and purposes he's not hurt. Yet, he is hurt. He does need surgery. Timelines don't exist in the army. And these people have experienced the unpredictable nature of this situation. It was very nice to be amongst people who knew the right questions to ask and the right questions not to ask. I know people are trying to be interested in my life and just wanting to know about the path my family and I are on....but that's the stress. I can't answer your questions. I don't know.

Anyway, it was nice to get out and meet new people! It helped that we won too. :)Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-16021667504006830072012-10-22T14:53:00.003-04:002012-10-22T14:53:41.394-04:00Tiger's Curse, Tigers Quest, & Tiger's Voyage by Colleen Houck.........Mesmerizing, captivating, intoxicating, addicting, Indiana Jones with a female heroine.

I love this series! I thought there were only 3 books, but luckily there is at least one more!! Thank goodness. I cried at the end of the third one.

There are so many reasons I love this book. Love, adventure, intrigue, mystery, and food. Yes, food. Food is as much a part of this book as the love interest and adventure. :) It's fabulous! 543 pages could not go fast enough. The heroine is a head-strong, intelligent girl. She is athletic, beautiful, humble and frustrating all at the same time!!

I love that Ms. Houck intertwines legends, folk lore, mythology, television series, old movies, Shakespeare, poetry, and adventure!! She is a master storyteller!

Absolutely LOVE this series of books!!Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-50677804101517410952012-10-22T01:18:00.001-04:002012-10-22T01:18:31.904-04:00How do you rant and rave about leaders with your children around? This morning, the men in my congregation were driving me crazy!! I don't want the boys to think that I am not supportive of the men, but in this instance, I was NOT supportive of the men! They made my morning more difficult instead of less difficult. Is it because I'm too accommodating? Why can't they accommodate me and my 35 -40 children I take care of for 2 hours every Sunday!!!! And because I'm a woman, my frustration comes out in the form of tears instead of well-thought out rational behavior! Sometimes I dislike the emotional, feminine side!

On the positive side, everything was a smashing success! Thank the Lord!! Because He ultimately gave me the inspiration and patience to follow through. Thank you!!Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-40875585915711054832012-10-18T13:02:00.000-04:002012-10-18T13:02:21.820-04:00President George Q. Cannon said: “No matter how serious the trial, how deep the distress, how great the affliction, [God] will never desert us. He never has, and He never will. He cannot do it. It is not His character. He is an unchangeable being; the same yesterday, the same today, and He will be the same throughout the eternal ages to come. We have found that God. We have made Him our friend, by obeying His Gospel; and He will stand by us. We may pass through the fiery furnace; we may pass through deep waters; but we shall not be consumed nor overwhelmed. We shall emerge from all these trials and difficulties the better and purer for them, if we only trust in our God and keep His commandments”

I truly believe this statement. Sometimes I forget that God is there for me. Sometimes I get mad. Sometimes I get sad. But if I hold on to the commandments and put my trust in Him, I will be alright. Things won't be perfect. But they will be bearable.Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-5692089782954960622012-10-17T01:24:00.000-04:002012-10-17T01:24:34.463-04:00These are my thoughts on BYU football at this moment in time. And yes, I did send this to Tom Holmoe, BYU Athletic Director.

"Mr. Holmoe,
Why hasn't Riley Nelson been benched for his mistakes? Why are we still seeing him as the starting quarterback?
It's sad when BYU fans, who are supposed to be Christ-like are wishing someone will make a season-ending hit on Riley Nelson becasue that is THE only way Riley will be taken out of the game. The coaches don't take him out. They don't bench him for mistakes. Instead they praise him. Instead they call it "grit and determination". Instead they put him in again and again and again. And we lose again and again and again.
Riley is a senior. Yes. Is he a leader? NO! He is selfish. He stays in the game wanting "one more chance" and instead he throws a pick 6. He doesn't pull himself out and let James Lark, who has waited his turn for 7 years, excel. He claims he can play and begs to be put in!! He is not a leader. I don't want my boys to be like him. Does he have grit? Yes. Is he using it wisely? No.
Why haven't the coaches put him in his place? They bow down to him because Bronco is a "fan"! Be a "fan" of your players when they're in the NFL - not when you're supposed to be their coach! Be a coach! Bench him!! Heaven knows Jake Heaps was benched for a LOT less last year!!
I'm a frustrated fan. I hold season tickets this year because I know Riley is gone and I want to continue going to football games. But......I don't like the way it's going. I don't like feeling like Riley is the "golden child" and can do NO wrong when his mistakes have cost us at least 3 games this year and 1 last year!! Riley can do wrong! He is not playing smart. He is being selfish. Bronco is not being a good head coach. Yes, Doman is the offensive coach, but if the offense isn't working it's the "head" coach who steps in and puts a stop to this nonsense!
I fault Bronco for being a "fan" of Riley instead of being a head coach. I fault Doman for letting his quarterback tell him "one more time" and giving up 6 points for that "one more time". I fault Riley for being selfish and not stepping down and pulling himself out of the game when he knows full well he's not 100%!!
Please bench the kid! He's making a fool out of the coaches, his teammates and himself. Ultimately, he's hurting the image of BYU. The image of all those who have come to BYU and made BYU football what it is today. It's a disservice to the school. With all the media coverage we receive, don't you think we ought to put our best foot forward. We aren't.
I'm hoping there'll be a change and someone will put Riley in his place. And inform Bronco what a head coach ought to do. Give this defense some help! Because of them and their hard work, they've kept us from being the laughing stock of college football!
Please let me know you've received this email.
Sincerely,
Andrea B Person"

My brothers talk. My Dad and I talk. I read the newspaper. And I'm pretty opinionated about this subject. I'm tired of the talking and wanted to DO something about it. So....I wrote a letter. One of the many I think I'll be writing. Maybe next time I'll go to the Cougar Wednesday night show and hope to get on the radio with Greg Rubell? We'll see.

Today has been a hard day for me. 17 years ago my Grandma died. I spent the better part of my childhood with her every Saturday. I don't know why today has been so hard. But it has. My Mom made Grandma's chilisauce today. I miss Grandma. She was wise. She was kind. She loved me. I never felt judged by her. I felt like I was doing her a favor whenever I did her dishes. I felt important. She talked with me. I never really talked, but I listened and she would talk to me and tell me stories. I loved decorating her house for Christmas. I think that's one reason I like Christmas so much.

She made macaroni salad with canned shrimp in it. I remember her making the sauce and licking it off the spoon.

We would go to the grocery store most Saturdays. And every time, she'd put on a new pair of pants and some lipstick. She was very proper. She looked like Queen Elizabeth. We always joke that we are literally of royal birth. In reality we do have some queens and kings as part of our ancestry.

Hard day. It was a beautiful day! A beautiful fall day!! She would've loved it! I love you Grandma! I miss you!!Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-18737901964232029112012-06-06T18:00:00.002-04:002012-06-06T18:00:22.508-04:00

He answered questions from the audience. And gave great advice.....like, take care of the girls - get a proper bra fitting, refrain from any trend having to do with belly buttons, i.e. too short of shirts, belly button rings, etc. ; refrain from wearing anything too low-cut or too high-cut; love your body; all the models are fake!Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-74062863092081829992012-04-27T23:44:00.003-04:002012-04-27T23:44:56.660-04:00

For Family Home Evening, we went to Thanksgiving Point and walked around the gardens during the Tulip Festival. Dad is holding Oliver, who is 6 almost 7 months old!!
Picture of my nephew, Oliver Radford Butler. What a cutie! Born to Jonathan and Mindy Butler. He was 5 weeks early. 7 lbs 3 oz 19 inches long. He had infections and had to be life-flighted to a different hospital. But he's doing well now. Expected to be in the hospital for at least another week. Both Mom and Dad have been able to hold him and he's just SO cute!!

Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-17598600232466170782011-10-03T13:44:00.002-04:002011-10-03T13:48:27.658-04:00We are back in UT, which means we get to attend the BYU football games. For my anniversary present 5 years ago, Elliot bought my family and I season tickets to the football games. While we were in MD, my brothers and Dad kept our tickets and attended keeping our seats for us. :) Now, I have 2 tickets and my brothers and Dad have theirs, so we're back at Lavell Edwards Stadium! Brock has been accompanying me and we have had a great time!! It is fun to actually know what is going on. I like being the Mom who can explain what a touchdown is, holding, off sides, false start, punting, quarterback, 1st - 4th down, etc. :) My brothers taught me a lot. And I can hold my own in their conversations too. Hee-hee! It's been fun being back in the stadium. Especially with my Brock!Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-57449375529712619382011-09-24T15:47:00.004-04:002011-09-24T16:01:52.600-04:00

I haven't posted much since returning to UT. It has definitely been a whirlwind. I was going to put pictures of the Radford Reunion on my blog. Elliot bought me a new camera specifically for reunion, and I ended up erasing all my pictures!! So much for the new camera. :( I was sad!! But we did have a good time.

School has begun for both boys and now I'm left attempting to use my time wisely while they're gone. My goal is to be on the computer only when they're at school, so I can focus on them when they get home. Lofty goal, eh? It's not been too hard because once they are home, we have homework, dinner, gymnastics on Tuesdays, showers, and the bedtime routine. There is little leisure time.

I have a new calling in my church. I am now in charge of all children from the ages of 18 months - 11 years old. This will be fun! And busy!! I'm excited though.

I took the boys of the family to see Jimmer Fredette and some other NBA draftees who aren't playing due to the lockout, aka Kwai Leonard, Kemba Walker, Nolan Smith, etc... and we had a great time!! There's a picture of the small boys - Brock, Scott and Zay.

Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-1468106554917714772011-08-09T23:06:00.002-04:002011-08-09T23:08:01.030-04:00I am in UT! YEA!! June was a whirlwind. July a tornado. August is just beginning. We'll see what comes. :)

Edith Lowry lived in Poland during World War II. She is Jewish and was in a work camp as well as a concentration camp. THE most amazing moment was when she pulled out her outfit that she had to wear. The room was completely silent.

She is an amazing lady. Her brother and mother did not survive. However, she, her father, her uncle, and her aunt survived. I'm not sure I breathed the entire night. What an amazing story! She was asked how strong her faith was. And she said at times it is strong and at times it wavers. She was completely honest. Now, I NEED to go to the Holocaust Museum while we're in D.C. That'll be a trip for my Dad and I. :)

Chocolate cake with chocolate filling and chocolate peanut butter buttercream frosting! YUM!! I ate a piece of cake every day for an entire week and a half. Plus I put 2 pieces in the freezer!! It was so yummy!

For my birthday, we went down to Fredericksburg Virginia, stayed in a hotel and visited some historical sites. The house behind us is the Kenmore house. During the Civil War, the house was turned into a hospital. It was a BEAUTIFUL home! George Washington's sister lived here.

On the grounds of the Kenmore Mansion, they had activities from the colonial time period, one of which was washing the clothes. The boys spent 30 minutes pretending to wash the clothes. Really they just wanted to get wet! :) But it was fun for them.

Every vacation I ever remember had a trip to a fudge shop. This one was no different! On Caroline Street in Fredericksburg, there is the most delightful fudge shop! Delicious fudge!! We bought a pound of fudge - then took the extra to the Memorial Day picnic and let the teenagers from our church eat the rest of it! Oreo cookie, peanut butter, key lime, tiger butter and mint chocolate swirl. YUMMY!!

As you can tell, I LOVE food! I LOVE to celebrate with food!! :) Delicious! Ryann, Megan, Heather, Robin, Jill & Tami! It was tons of fun!!

Yes, he's in preschool and he walked on stage and received his diploma for graduating. :) In his bio that was read, it stated, "Scott is a very energetic boy......he entertained his teachers daily with his stories that he told." He is definitely an entertainer!

Scott is going to miss his buddy Luke! The two of them were hilarious together. They could be kept entertained for hours with a couple of toys. They have the best imagination!! The teachers at school had a difficult time keeping track of the two of them. More times than I can count, Scott was called Luke and Luke was called Scott. They were "two peas in a pod". Sometimes Luke told his Mom that he and Scott weren't allowed to sit together because they were "talking too much". I'm so glad they were in class together. Truly, I will miss Luke and his mom, Sherry.

Ms. Marissa. Scott was her project for the year. She followed him all year long. I asked him what he wanted to give her for the last day of the school year and he says, "flowers". I think he had a slight crush on her. :)

Scott had a burrito with ham, cheese and egg!! And he ate the entire thing. I know, he's growing up. And tonight for dinner he's having "cheesy sauce". It's really macaroni noodles in spaghetti sauce with cheese on top. He is actually eating it and tasting it. Usually if he eats something it's with a large drink of water, so everything is watered down. :) Not this time. It's about time!! I guess he just realizes he's not going to get away with it anymore. Go Scott!!Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-76500309772069370242011-05-08T21:14:00.002-04:002011-05-20T23:21:15.270-04:00Because of our move and because it's not my time to be Relief Society President anymore, I am going to be released next week. ............................
I was going to try to put down on paper the feelings I was going through, but then I never finished them. It's been two weeks now. And I've been released for a week. Let me tell you this has been THE longest week, ever! With only my children to think about, I've definitely slacked off a lot. I cried after church on Sunday - luckily a friend took the boys and told me to come and get them when I was feeling a bit better. Two and a half hours later, I picked up the boys. I had taken some time to reflect, to write my feelings down, to pray and realize I'm not alone, even if I'm feeling VERY much alone.
All was well, right? Not so. Thoughts and feelings flooded my mind and tears rolled freely down my cheeks yet again. Being the Relief Society President gave me something to focus on in a very difficult time in my life. It gave me purpose. It gave me the ability and desire to live for a greater cause. So, being released made me feel empty, numb, and insignificant. I know, in my heart that I still have a purpose and a greater cause in helping my boys. But I couldn't get out of this slump.
Needless to say this week has been a LONG week! Scott didn't have school all week; I no longer had exercise group I was in charge of, so there wasn't a reason to get up and get moving. And Brock talked back to me EVERY time I asked him to get ready for school, or to come and eat breakfast or to brush his teeth. I didn't have the energy to fight with him, so Brock was late Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday we finally got him there on time. Then Thursday I had him skip school for our own personal field trip. :) And now it's Friday.
I know I was supposed to be in this calling. I know I'm supposed to get ready for our move now and it's time to move on. It's just hard sometimes. Especially when I'm all alone. I was talking with my friend Amy and telling her that all I want is a BIG hug and no one gives them to me out here. I don't know whether I give off the vibe that I don't like to receive hugs or what, but all I want is a big hug! Like "Bones" the other day when she had Booth there to give her a hug. I want my "Booth" to give me a hug. I guess I'll have my boys give me some hugs and do an awful lot of praying. I know I'm not alone. But I sure do feel alone.Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-54658543189666634472011-03-22T13:38:00.001-04:002011-03-22T13:38:33.235-04:00I'm going HOME!! :)Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03317732279960576440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8276513132462744251.post-4155452164822356352011-03-14T21:58:00.003-04:002011-03-14T22:02:30.274-04:00 Look at my two boys!
